Activate Puna is a community revitalization and creative placemaking project that brings people together for enriching experiences around art, food, and music. The activation shines a light on Puna’s unique identity and is a celebration of the region’s people, culture, history, and stories.

IMUA PUNA FLAGS

Imua Puna Flags

A signature feature of our Activate Puna events is the IMUA PUNA flag installation, inspired by the handmade prayer flags sent to Pu‘uhonua o Puna a.k.a. “The Hub” during the 2018 lava flow. We have continued this community-centered creative art project that fosters positive energy by bringing together 3,000+ one-of-a-kind works of art by keiki from Puna schools and community groups.

IMUA PUNA FLAGS represent the collective spirit and sentiments of our community, bringing visual voices to hopes and dreams that flutter in the wind, spreading aloha to all throughout Puna and beyond.

Puna, particularly Pāhoa Town, has been at the heart of our activation series since its launch in 2019. Each year, we’ve hosted a community block party and benefit concert around the anniversary of the 2018 Kīlauea Volcanic Eruption in 2019, 2022, and 2023. These events celebrate the resilience of our community, showcasing its strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. By providing a platform for connection, collaboration, and sharing, we empower, uplift, and strengthen residents, activating both individuals and the community as a whole to thrive.
